Your AC system is comprised of numerous working parts that are responsible for cooling your home or business. One of the key components found in your AC system is the compressor.
An AC compressor is essentially the heart of your air conditioner. It pressurizes refrigerant — the fluid responsible for absorbing heat from inside the building and cooling air cycled into the building. This is all accomplished when the AC compressor compresses the refrigerant. The refrigerant is condensed into a fluid and is released much hotter than when it comes into the compressor. From here, the heat dissipates through condenser coils, and the refrigerant cools back down.
As your AC system cools your home or business, the compressor must kick on over and over to continue this cycle. When your compressor fails, the entire system will fail, which is why it is important to pay attention to signs that your AC compressor needs to be repaired. Watch out for these warning signs that your AC compressor is going bad.
1. You Notice a Fluid Leak
Over time, your compressor’s bearings can loosen. When this happens, refrigerant can begin to leak. If you notice fluid pooling under your AC unit, it could be due to the compressor. In this case, you’ll need a professional to repair the compressor to prevent future leaks.
2. It is Making Unusual Noises
While you should always be able to hear your compressor kick on, if it is making excessively loud noises, it could be a sign that the compressor is under stress. In some cases, the compressor might even shake or vibrate violently when it attempts to turn on.
A noisy compressor could be due to failing electrical components or a dislodged fan motor. Either way, you should address the problem right away to prevent a complete AC system failure.
3.Your AC System is Not Cooling the Building Effectively
In some cases, as your AC compressor weakens, it might continue to operate but do so inefficiently. For example, if you notice that the air coming out of your vents is no longer as cool as it once was, it might be due to the AC compressor. Additionally, decreased airflow is one of the earliest indications that your AC compressor is failing.
4. The Outdoor Unit is Overheating
If there is not ample airflow around your outdoor AC unit, it can place an undue burden on your compressor. You may notice that the AC unit begins to overheat as the compressor is overworked and can’t keep up with its demands.
5. The Compressor Isn’t Kicking On
If your AC system is no longer cooling your home or business, stand outside by your outdoor unit. If you hear the fan running continually, but the compressor is not kicking on, it is likely due to a failure in the compressor.
While AC compressors are fairly simple machines, they can sometimes fail due to a variety of reasons. This can lead to a number of problems, including poor air quality, potential exposure to contaminants and excess electricity bills.
